COMMITMENT TO SAFE ENVIRONMENT
The Diocese of Gallup has put into place a process that assists in keeping our young and vulnerable people safe, by a thorough screening process. Appendix XII: Safe Environment Training Implementation
The screening process involves completing an application, interviews, signing a code of ethics and a background check which includes reference checks for all clergy, religious, seminarians, employees, volunteer leaders responsible for youth programs and those volunteers who work directly with minors or vulnerable persons. (The latter are otherwise known as “Affected Volunteers”).
All employees and affected volunteers who minister with minors must have or will have the juvenile sexual abuse training awareness program VIRTUS; virtus.org. This training requires a preliminary session-(phase one)- and then ongoing training-(phase two). See pp. 7-8 in the PPPM for further details.
Please call the Diocese Safe Environment for initial foundational setup:
505-863-4406.
All parents of minors that participate in any activity associated with the Catholic Church are offered VIRTUS training.

SLEEP HYGIENE
A gentle reminder to our students and families that we encourage the practice of good sleep hygiene as our teaching staff are noticing that our students are often tired and checked out during the day. Here are a few tips to promote sleep hygiene however, not all approaches will work equally for all children and it can be a trial and error but we encourage you to explore what supports your student and keep doing it.

- Create a Routine - a consistent bedtime routine lets your student’s body and mind know that it’s time to settle down and prepare for sleep.
- Best a bedtime - a sleep schedule works with your student’s natural biological clock to promote dozing off with regularity. Try to keep the same bedtime on weekends and school nights.
- Implement a Screen Curfew - mobile devices including phones, tablets, and TVs emit a type of blue light that suppresses a hormone that promotes sleep. Screen time stimulates the brain, making it harder to wind down for sleep.
- Exercise - physical activity is proven to help people of all ages fall asleep faster.
- Avoid Scary or Violent Content - feeling scared or worried is a common reason kids can’t sleep.
- Limit or Avoid Caffeine - caffeine is a stimulant that can both make it difficult to fall asleep and reduce the quality of sleep.
